President Trump spoke with Japan’s prime minister Monday about North Korea’s weekend launch of a short-range missile, with both leaders affirming their strategy to compel Pyongyang to abandon its weapons programs.
Mr. Trump and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe “discussed recent developments on North Korea and reaffirmed U.S.-Japan unity in how to achieve the final, fully verified denuclearization of” North Korea, the White House said.
North Korea is believed to have tested a short-range missile Saturday on its east coast, in violation of international agreements. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the U.S. still sees a “path forward” for further denuclearization talks with Pyongyang despite the development.
The White House said Mr. Trump and Mr. Abe also discussed the president’s state visit to Japan later this month.
“They exchanged views on a range of regional and bilateral trade issues, and the president emphasized his strong support for America’s great farmers,” the statement said.
