ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York Attorney General Letitia James says an investigation of the death of a man being restrained by police shows the need for body-worn cameras on state troopers.
James released a report Friday on the May 2018 death of 58-year-old Robert Scott in the Wayne County town of Lyons. A sheriff’s deputy and two troopers had been called to investigate a report of people fighting in an apartment where Scott had been staying with a woman.
Scott died after being handcuffed by troopers. A medical examiner ruled Scott’s death was caused by acute cocaine intoxication with cardiovascular disease a contributing factor.
The attorney general found the police restraint was reasonable and justified. James said state police body cameras would have given a more complete record of the incident.
