MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - Longtime journalist and author Gwen Florio has been named executive editor of the Missoulian.

Publisher Jim Strauss announced the appointment Thursday. Florio takes over for Kathy Best, who is director of the new Harvard Center for Investigative Journalism at the University of Maryland.

Florio, who has been the newspaper’s city editor since 2016, says she wants to continue the paper’s watchdog and investigative work.

Strauss said Florio played a key role in a recent investigation of private treatment programs for troubled teens that led the legislature to change oversight of the programs.

Florio also worked for the Missoulian from 2007 to 2013. Her stories on sexual assaults at the University of Montana led to a federal investigation and policy changes for investigating and prosecuting such complaints.

She has written six novels since 2013 and plans to continue writing.
