PHOENIX (AP) - Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery and 10 other lawyers have applied for an open Arizona Supreme Court seat.
A screening committee charged with recommending people for top Arizona court judgeships will consider them for the seat being vacated by retiring Chief Justice Scott Bales on July 31.
All 11 had previously applied to replace Justice John Pelander, who retired in March. Court of Appeals judge James P. Beene was named to replace Pelander by Republican Gov. Doug Ducey.
The other applicants include five appeals court judges, two lower court judges, a prosecutor, a public defender and a private practice attorney.
The Commission on Appellate Court Appointments will review applications on June 25 and interview select candidates on July 26 before sending at least three names to Ducey.
