GROTON, Conn. (AP) - Police have determined that the discharge of pepper spray at a Connecticut high school prom that sent three students to the hospital was an accident.
Groton police said Wednesday there was no intent to harm anyone at the Stonington High School prom Saturday night at the Mystic Marriott and they do not anticipate filing criminal charges.
They did not release the name of the student responsible.
Police and firefighters responded to the Groton hotel at about 9:45 p.m. after receiving reports of a strange odor making people sick. Three students were taken to the hospital with respiratory distress, were treated and released. The prom ended early.
Stonington High Principal Mark Friese in an email to parents said there was “no malicious intent” and the student responsible has “received appropriate consequences.”
