4 endangered lemurs born at Florida zoo

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Florida zoo officials are announcing the births of four critically endangered black-and-white ruffed lemurs.

Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens posted on Facebook Wednesday that the four male lemurs were born May 19. It’s the third litter for their parents, Hawk and Potter.

The Facebook post says Hawk has proven herself again to be a calm and capable mother with excellent instincts. The infants are still bonding with their family and won’t be on display for the immediate future.

All lemurs are native only to the island of Madagascar. Zoo officials say they are critically endangered in the wild, due to habitat loss from deforestation.
