Cal Thomas shows a lack of understanding in his column “Once a terrorist, always a terrorist” (Web, May 27), about the terrible, unjust 20-year sentence given to American Taliban member John Walker Lindh. Mr. Thomas accuses Lindh of being a “terrorist” who should have possibly been executed for his “crimes.”

This is absolutely absurd. As far as I can see, Lindh did not commit any crimes or acts of terrorism. He did not attack America. This country’s government started bombing Afghanistan and unjustly killing innocent human beings, civilian and military, who had nothing to do with the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Moral laws, including those against the unjust taking of human life, apply to everyone equally. The real terrorists, apart from those in al Qaeda and the Taliban who killed human beings for political reasons, were President George W. Bush, the military leadership and the bomber pilots who took the lives of their fellow human beings unnecessarily.
