HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas Rehabilitation Services says it is ending its residential program in Hot Springs and laying off 120 employees.
The Arkansas Career Training Institute is a state-owned facility that provides young disabled adults with vocational training. ARS says switching to a non-residential model will allow it to “use taxpayer dollars more efficiently.”
ARS Commissioner Alan McClain tells The Sentinel-Record that a third of the current budget is used to support the facility in Hot Springs. By ending the residential program, McClain says, the savings will be used to support other programs across the state.
McClain says the layoffs include housekeeping staff, maintenance workers and food-service employees. He says about 40 to 50 vocational counselors and instructors will likely be retained.
