Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Odubel Herrera was arrested in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Monday night following a domestic incident with his girlfriend.

Herrera, 27, was charged with simple assault after officers reportedly found his girlfriend, who is 20, with “visible signs of injury to her arms and neck that was sustained after being assaulted by her boyfriend.”

Major League Baseball placed Herrera on administrative leave while its investigation of the incident is ongoing, in accordance with the domestic violence policy.

The Phillies released the following statement about the arrest:

“This morning we were made aware of an alleged incident involving Odubel Herrera. Upon receiving this information, we immediately reported the incident to Major League Baseball, which has informed us that Herrera has been placed on Administrative Leave. The Phillies take any domestic violence accusation seriously, and strongly support the Joint Domestic Violence Policy agreed upon by MLB and the MLBPA.”

Herrera is playing his fifth big-league season for the Phillies, who are in first place in the National League East. The Phillies had off Monday, which is likely why Herrera and his girlfriend had the ability to travel to Atlantic City.
