As the Washington Nationals prepare to start a four-game series in the Big Apple, their division opponent was dealt some bad news.
The New York Mets confirmed Monday that outfielder Yoenis Cespedes fractured his ankle. Anthony Di Como, the Mets beat writer for MLB.com, first tweeted Monday afternoon about the fracture.
“Yoenis Cespedes fractured his ankle in an accident on his ranch in Florida,” he wrote.

The Mets confirmed the injury at a press conference shortly afterward as general manager Brodie Van Wagenen told reporters the accident resulted in multiple fractures in one of his ankles.
“He had a violent fall in which he stepped in a hole and put his leg and foot in a difficult position,” he said. Van Wagenen said he fell off an animal that was not a horse.
To be clear, it is multiple fractures of Cespedes’ right ankle, suffered during a “violent fall” off a non-horse at his ranch. There you go.

There was no immediate indication from the Mets on how long they expect to be without Cespedes, a formidable offensive force for them.
In 38 games so far this year, Cespedes has 9 home runs and 29 runs batted in — a pace for 30 home runs and more than 100 RBIs over a season. He is batting .262 with an .821 OPS.
The Mets host the Nationals for a four-game series in New York starting Monday night.
