Rep. Steve Cohen brought a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken and a toy chicken to mock Attorney General William P. Barr for skipping out on a House Judiciary Committee hearing Thursday.

The Tennessee Democrat reportedly brought the toy and started eating the chicken during the hearing, telling people, “the attorney general is here!”

In a statement following the hearing, with the toy chicken in tow, Mr. Cohen added, “Chicken Barr should have shown up today and answered questions.”

Mr. Cohen was making a statement about Mr. Barr “chickening” out of his scheduled appearance in front of the House Judiciary Committee.

Mr. Barr canceled Wednesday after it was announced that the committee’s staff counsel would question the attorney general instead of the representatives.

“He is terrified of having to face a skilled attorney,” committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler said Wednesday. “I can understand, given how dishonest he’s been since March 24, at the latest, I can understand why he is afraid of facing [a] more effective examination. We’re finished.”

Mr. Nadler said in front of Mr. Barr’s empty chair Thursday that his refusal to show for the scheduled hearing has left the government itself “very much at stake.”
