DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - Dayton, Ohio, has called off plans to build a professional-sized turf field at a local park after archaeological testing found possible evidence of Native American artifacts or remains at the site.
The National Football League’s foundation had announced it would finance the new field at Triangle Park in Dayton to commemorate the game played there by the Dayton Triangles and the Columbus Panhandles on Oct. 3, 1920.
The city put a hold on the groundbreaking to conduct testing after learning a Native American burial ground may be located there.
The Dayton Daily News reports the city said in a statement Wednesday that it’s working with the NFL to try to find another location for the field. The NFL plans the donation as it celebrates the league’s 100th season.
