Democrat Stacey Abrams said Thursday she could jump into the presidential race sometime in the fall and still have a real shot to win.
Ms. Abrams, who narrowly lost in the Georgia governor’s race last year, said there is a “robust” crop of candidates having important conversations.
“But my mission is to make certain that we are keeping that attention focused all the way through the campaign. And so I’m going to keep watching and decide if I need to jump in,” Ms Abrams said on MSNBC.
“I do believe I can enter the conversation as late as the fall and still have a real chance to win,” she said.
She also said no one has reached out to her about being a possible presidential ticket-mate in 2020.
“And as I’ve said before, right now we should be focused on the presidential nominees,” she said. “If I decide to join the fray, then I look forward to being a robust competitor.”
Despite lobbying from Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, Ms. Abrams said she will not challenge GOP Sen. David Perdue in Georgia’s U.S. Senate race in 2020.
