SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Authorities say a Utah woman narrowly avoided being impaled by a metal beam that smashed through her car windshield on the highway.

Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Chris Jones says Nicci Sanders was driving on Interstate 15 Monday near Clearfield when a 4-foot (1-meter) metal beam fell from a roofing company’s boom truck after the driver forgot to secure the beam.

Sanders swerved as far left on the highway as she could when the beam flew toward her, missing her by mere inches. She was not harmed.

Jones says other drivers on the highway presumed Sanders was dead.

He says the truck driver was cited for not securing their load.

Jones told the Deseret News debris-related crashes are common. At least 700 incidents were reported in Utah last year.
