Most voters want special counsel Robert Mueller to testify in front of Congress about the investigation he led into Russian interference in the 2016 elections, new polling revealed Wednesday.

Conducted over the weekend among 1,995 registered voters, the Morning Consult/Politico survey asked whether Mr. Mueller should answer questions on Capitol Hill about his recently completed investigation into Russian election meddling and related matters.

More than half of all respondents — 56% — said they think that Mr. Mueller should testify, while around one-fifth of people polled — 19% — said he should not, pollsters reported.

Nearly one-quarter of all people polled — 24% — said they were unsure or had no opinion about Mr. Mueller potentially testifying, according to the results.

When broken down by political party, the results showed that registered Democrats were far more likely to favor testimony from Mr. Mueller than Republicans, however.

Nearly four-out-of-five Democrats — 79% — said Mr. Mueller should testify before Congress, 17% said they were unsure and 4% said he should not.

Republicans were nearly split evenly on whether the special counsel should answer questions from Congress, meanwhile: 37% percent said Mr. Mueller should testify, 27% said they were unsure, and 36% said he should not.

A former FBI director, Mr. Mueller was appointed in May 2017 to investigate Russian involvement in the 2016 elections and related matters, including whether President Trump obstructed justice by interfering in the probe.

Nearly two years since his appointment, a lengthy but heavily redacted report released last month summarizing the results of Mr. Mueller’s probe faulted Russia for meddling in the elections but failed to make a determination with respect to whether Mr. Trump obstructed justice.

Mr. Trump said earlier this month that Mr. Mueller “should not testify.” He has since said he would leave the decision to Attorney General William P. Barr.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, New York Democrat and chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said he wants Mr. Mueller to testify before the end of the month.
