Presidential candidate Sen. Kristen Gillibrand said Wednesday an Alabama abortion bill extensively restricting abortions is an “attack on women” and ultimately a plan to overturn a 46-year-old Supreme Court precedent.
“This Alabama effort, and the effort across this country now in 29 states, is an all-out attack on women’s reproductive freedom and our basic civil rights. This is a plan by the Republican Party, make no mistake, to overturn Roe v. Wade and turn back the clock on women’s civil and human rights,” the New York Democrat said on CNN’s “Newsroom” show.
Ms. Gillibrand added she does not believe President Trump’s Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh saying they “respected precedent” and believes they will help Republicans overturn the law.
Ms. Gillibrand will reportedly hold a rally at the Georgia Statehouse Thursday to campaign against the state’s new restrictive abortion law, according to MSNBC.
Alabama and Georgia are one of the various states that have passed laws directly contradicting the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade, and could ultimately overturn the ruling that legalized abortions across the country if it makes it to the more conservative Supreme Court.
“It’s to address the issue that Roe. v. Wade was decided on. Is that baby in the womb a person?” said Alabama Rep. Terri Collins, the bill’s sponsor.
