WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) - A counterprotest has been planned in response to backlash against an event featuring a drag queen reading to children at a Maine bookstore.
The Portland Press Herald reports that Waterville resident Elizabeth Leonard created a Facebook page calling for the counter-protest after opposition erupted online to the Drag Queen Story Hour at the Children’s Book Cellar.
Waterville Mayor Nick Isgro and others denounced the story hour on Facebook, and a protest was planned.
The protest and counterprotest are both scheduled for June 1, the day of the event.
The story hour features drag queen Valerie Honeywell and an arts and crafts activity as part of the Waterville Pride celebration.
Bookstore owner Ellen Richmond says the story hour is still on and that support for the event has outpaced negative reactions.
