Vice President Mike Pence said Monday he was “disappointed” that South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg has used his name to spark a debate on religious tolerance of LGBTQ people.
Mr. Buttigieg, the openly gay presidential candidate, blasted Mr. Pence in April for his views on homosexuality, telling the vice president his marriage to a man has moved him “closer to God.”
“That’s the thing I wish the Mike Pences of the world would understand: That if you have a problem with who I am, your quarrel is not with me. Your quarrel, sir, is with my creator,” the Indiana Democrat said.
Mr. Pence said that he and Mr. Buttigieg had a “good relationship when I was governor and he was mayor in the state.”
“What was troubling to me was his assertion and others assertion that was critical of people of our religious beliefs, broadly. And, I remember a reference to the ‘Mike Pences’ of the world, and I think every American cherishes the right of each of us to live out our faith and live out our beliefs. It was disappointing to hear that,” Mr. Pence said on “Fox News @ Night.”
