Former President Jimmy Carter is recovering “comfortably” from surgery after he fell and broke his hip at his Georgia home, his nonprofit said Monday.

Mr. Carter was on his way to a turkey hunt, which is still on his mind, the Carter Center said.

“President Carter said his main concern is that turkey season ends this week, and he has not reached his limit,” the center said in a written statement. “He hopes the state of Georgia will allow him to roll over the unused limit to next year.”

It’s the latest health scare for the 94-year-old, who was diagnosed with melanoma that spread to his brain and liver in late 2015 but announced an amazing recovery months later.

The peanut farmer from Plains, Georgia, served as president from 1977 to 1981. He faced a series of challenges, including economic woes and the Iranian hostage crisis, and lost to Ronald Reagan in his reelection bid.

He is known for his post-presidential work, including humanitarian work through the Carter Center, diplomatic efforts and home-building through Habitat for Humanity.
