OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - The University of Mississippi will salute more than 5,500 graduates Saturday, although it will do so under a roof because of rain in the forecast.
Former commanding general of the Mississippi National Guard Augustus Collins will address graduates at 9:30 a.m. Saturday inside The Pavilion arena.
Graduates will then collect degrees from different academic units.
Typically, most Ole Miss commencement ceremonies take place in the wooded area known as the Grove in the center of campus.
Collins is now chief executive of Jackson-based MINACT Inc., which operates federal Job Corps centers providing career training. Collins earned a bachelor’s degree from Ole Miss in 1982 and is currently president of the university’s alumni association.
Collins is the first African American to become a general in the Mississippi National Guard.
