Democratic Sen. Cory A. Booker said he will “bring a fight” to combat gun violence if he wins the 2020 presidential election, according to a CNN interview released Friday.
“I’m taking a fight to this issue like folks will never see before because we’re better than this as a country. It’s a uniquely American problem. No other country has this kind of carnage. More people in my lifetime have died in this nation due to gun violence then all the wars from the Revolutionary War to now,” Mr. Booker said on CNN’s “The Axe Files” show.
“We’re not going to give thoughts and prayers, which to me is just bulls—-. I’m sorry to say that as a man of faith, but I was taught that faith without works is dead,” the New Jersey senator said.
“We’re going to bring a fight with everything that I have to solve this problem because it’s solvable, and we know it,” he said.
Mr. Booker introduced a plan Monday that would require all gun owners to be licensed by the federal government, limit Americans to one gun purchase per month, crack down on firearm manufacturers and ban military-style semi-automatic rifles.
The day after he released his proposal, a shooting occurred Tuesday at STEM School Highlands Ranch in Colorado that left one student dead and several others injured.
Mr. Booker will lead a roundtable discussion of his gun control plan Friday in North Carolina, where a gunman opened fire last week on a university campus, killing two and wounding four.
