HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut’s largest health care employee union has authorized a strike to begin June 3 says if additional funding for pay raises isn’t added to the state budget.
More than 2,400 workers at 20 nursing homes are seeking 4% pay raises in 2019 and 2020, arguing they’ve only received small increases in recent years. They also want better staff-to-patient ratios.
SEIU 1199 New England said in a statement Thursday that Gov. Ned Lamont’s budget proposal did not include the necessary funding and the General Assembly has not responded to union demands.
The union says some workers are making barely above minimum wage.
House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz (ehr-eh-SIM’-oh-wits) says he hopes a deal can be reached.
The union suspended plans to strike May 1 after Lamont requested more time to negotiate.
