Former Indiana Gov. Evan Bayh says one “can really feel the pages of history turning” with the recent deaths of his father and Sen. Richard Lugar.
Those attending Wednesday’s memorial service for former Sen. Birch Bayh marked a moment of silence for Lugar, who died Sunday at the age of 87.
Birch Bayh was a Democrat who defeated the Republican Lugar in a 1974 Senate campaign, but they served in the Senate together after Lugar won a seat two years later.
Evan Bayh says the people of Indiana were blessed to have two statesmen of their caliber serving the state.
Birch Bayh died in March at age 91. He sponsored the constitutional amendments lowering the voting age to 18 and allowing the replacement of vice presidents.

Former U.S. Sen. Birch Bayh is being remembered as a statesman and author of two constitutional amendments, but also as a jovial campaigner who knew where to find Dairy Queens across Indiana.
Fellow politicians and family members honored Bayh with a memorial service Wednesday attended by a few hundred people inside the Indiana Statehouse.
Evan Bayh, the late senator’s son who served as Indiana governor and senator, said his father focused on doing what was right. Former Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels said that while he worked against Bayh in political campaigns, he knew Bayh was “a doer.”
Bayh died in March at the age of 91. The Democrat represented Indiana in the Senate for 18 years until he lost his 1980 re-election bid. Bayh’s time in the Senate was highlighted by his sponsorship of the landmark federal Title IX law banning discrimination against women in college admissions and sports. He also sponsored constitutional amendments lowering the voting age to 18 and allowing the replacement of vice presidents.

A bipartisan group of Indiana leaders will be honoring former U.S. Sen. Birch Bayh during a public memorial service at the Statehouse in Indianapolis.

The service is set to start at noon Wednesday. Evan Bayh, the late senator’s son who served as Indiana governor and senator, will be a speaker, as will current Gov. Eric Holcomb, former Gov. Mitch Daniels and U.S. District Court Chief Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson.
