RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A state legislator is one of Gov. Roy Cooper’s three nominees for the North Carolina Utilities Commission.
Cooper announced Wednesday that Sen. Floyd McKissick and Jeff Hughes, both of Durham, and Kimberly Duffley of Raleigh are his choices to replace outgoing members on the powerful seven-member panel. The commission regulates companies that offer electricity, natural gas and other services.
The governor’s nominees for eight-year terms must be confirmed by the General Assembly. McKissick would have to resign from the Senate - where he’s served since 2007 - to take the commissioner’s post.
Duffley has been a commission attorney since 2011. Hughes is a UNC School of Government professor.
Cooper also nominated Christopher Ayers to continue leading the commission’s public staff, which represents consumers in matters like proposed rate increases.
