President Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani described Tuesday special counsel Robert Mueller’s objection to Attorney General William Barr’s summary of his report as “very odd.”
“If he didn’t want confusion, he should have made a decision. He was made special counsel to make decisions, and the fact he didn’t say to me [that Trump] was innocent,” Mr. Giuliani said in an interview with NBC News.
Mr. Giuliani then repeated the president’s claims, “there was no prosecutable obstruction case because there was no underlying crime and no obstruction.”
The Justice Department released a March 27 letter on Wednesday from Mr. Mueller to Mr. Barr, in which the special counsel objected to the attorney general’s four-page summary and said it was causing public confusion.
“This threatens to undermine a central purpose for which the department appointed the special counsel: to assure full public confidence in the outcome of the investigations,” Mr. Mueller wrote.
He urged Mr. Barr to release the summaries he and his team had prepared, saying it “would alleviate the misunderstandings that have arisen and would answer congressional and public questions about the nature and outcome of our investigation.”
Mr. Barr is testifying Wednesday in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee for the first time since the report’s release.
