UPLAND, Calif. (AP) - A replica World War II-era German plane with a swastika on its tail has crashed in inland Southern California but the pilot escaped with moderate injuries.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the Storch FL-156C crashed Wednesday under unknown circumstances after taking off from Cable Airport in Upland.
TV news footage showed the single-engine plane, its nose crumpled, lying in a dirt field.
The original Storch planes were built in Germany beginning in the 1930s.
Upland police Sgt. Moe Duran says the pilot - the only person aboard - was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
The FAA will investigate the crash, which occurred about 40 miles (65 kilometers) east of downtown Los Angeles.
