Giants general manager Dave Gettleman justified his team’s selection of Duke’s Daniel Jones with the sixth overall pick last week because he knew “for a fact” two other teams would have drafted the quarterback before New York picked again at No.17.
Then a report emerged stating that Washington and Denver were those two teams.
Redskins president Bruce Allen, however, strongly disagreed with Gettleman’s assertion.
“I’m almost positive Dave has no clue what our draft board would be,” Allen said Tuesday on The NFL Network. “I don’t know which draft boards he knows, but he doesn’t know ours.”
With Jones off the board, the Redskins selected Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins at No. 15. But Allen said the Redskins took the player they wanted to pick. Coach Jay Gruden said last week Haskins was the No.1 quarterback on the team’s board.
In the lead-up to the draft, ESPN reported the Redskins were internally divided over Haskins and Jones — with Allen and owner Dan Snyder preferring Haskins.
When the Giants selected Jones, cameras caught Haskins, a New Jersey native before moving to Maryland for high school, laughing at the pick and shaking his head.
“I just wanted a place that wanted me and that was the Redskins,” Haskins said. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity I get to play them twice a year. That’ll be a great opportunity for me.”
