DUCK, N.C. (AP) - A town along North Carolina’s Outer Banks is seeking advice on how to alleviate flooding from a university in the mountains.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Virginia, reports the town of Duck received a $20,000 grant from the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management for the study. The town is contracting with Western Carolina University to assess flooding hazards.

The study should be finished by the end of the year.

About 400 people live in Duck, where the population increases to several thousand during tourist season.

The university team will examine buildings and roads and offer general options on what the town should do but won’t give specific solutions.

Town manager Chris Layton says Duke plans to incorporate the results into its land use plan.
