HOUSTON (AP) - A jury has found a Houston man guilty of evading arrest and causing the death of a police officer who had pursued the man because he was a shoplifting suspect.

The jury returned a guilty verdict Friday against 30-year-old Dante Moore in the 2016 death of Bellaire motorcycle officer Anthony Marco Zarate.

Zarate was chasing after Moore when his motorcycle struck a parked landscaping truck. Zarate was taken to a hospital where he died.

The Houston Chronicle reports that much of the testimony during the trial hinged on whether Moore’s evasion directly caused the death of the 52-year-old officer. The jury after about five hours of deliberation determined that it had.

The jury later reconvened to determine his punishment. The charge carries a term of 2 to 20 years in prison, but the punishment could be extended because Moore has been in prison twice before.
