CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - The signature landmark at the flagship school of the University of North Carolina system is undergoing some repairs.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports crews were scheduled to begin erecting a safety fence on Thursday around the Old Well at UNC-Chapel Hill. A news release from UNC’s Facilities Services says workers will follow up the fencing with scaffolding to support the structure so they can repair three of its columns.

The work is expected to take two to three weeks, depending on the weather.

The well was built in 1795 to provide water for the campus. According to the university, the original wooden shelter over the well was replaced with a neoclassical rotunda in 1897. That structure was replaced in 1954 with the rotunda that stands today.
