The stepsister of Anne Frank has met with Southern California high school students who were photographed giving Nazi salutes around a swastika formed by drinking cups at a party.
Holocaust survivor Eva Schloss spoke to the youths Thursday at Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach.
The 89-year-old Schloss told reporters it was an emotional meeting in which she described her experiences during the Holocaust at the Auschwitz death camp
Schloss says the students apologized for their behavior and indicated they didn’t realize what it really meant.
Schloss says she thought the students had learned a lesson for life.
School officials say she met with a group of about 50 people including students involved in the incident, student leaders, parents and community members.
The photo surfaced last weekend, shocking the community.

Rabbi Reuven Mintz of the Chabad Center for Jewish Life says the meeting will be private, but the 89-year-old Schloss will speak to news media afterward.

School officials and other area leaders condemned anti-Semitic actions and hundreds of people came to a meeting at the school to express outrage.
