CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Future New Hampshire governors would face stricter campaign finance rules when it comes to their inaugural committees under a bill passed by the state Senate.
The bill comes in response to reports that family members and close political allies of Republican Gov. Chris Sununu have been paid about $165,000 from his inaugural committee. The governor’s office has said the payments were for things related to the inauguration or operating the office.
Previous governors weren’t subject to any reporting requirements, but lawmakers now are moving to tighten rules enacted before Sununu took office. The bill sent from the Senate to the House on Thursday would limit individual contributions to $10,000 and would require detailed reporting of expenditures over $1,000.
The bill passed 22-2, with two Republicans voting no. Sununu supports the bill.
