PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo is seeking to shift $1.3 million of the cost of educating children and teenagers in juvenile detention to cities and towns.
The Providence Journal reports that Providence and Cranston would pay most of the share under the proposal included in the Democrat’s budget plan.
Department of Children, Youth and Families spokeswoman Kerri White says the change would ensure detained youth aren’t treated differently than other children.
Cranston Mayor Allan Fung criticized the proposal, saying the governor is “constantly” trying to put fees and costs on cities and towns. He says Cranston would pay about $164,000 under the proposal.
Fung was the Republican nominee for governor who lost to Raimondo in November.
The House Finance Committee is scheduled to hear the proposal Wednesday.
