Ty Cobb, a former attorney for the White House during the beginning of Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia, on Tuesday called the special counsel “an American hero” and said the probe was not a “witch hunt.”
“I don’t feel the investigation is a witch hunt. I wish it had happened on a quicker timetable. But it didn’t. And that’s, you know, and that’s unfortunate. But at the same time, it’s not a real criticism of the special counsel that on the timing because there were a lot of surprises,” Mr. Cobb told ABC News in a podcast, adding, “I think Bob Mueller’s an American hero.”
Mr. Cobb joined the White House in July 2017 and retired in May 2018 as a special counsel to the office of the White House. He was able to get President Trump to cooperate with Mr. Mueller’s team and share documents to help with the investigation.
Mr. Cobb said that during his time in the White House, he prevented Mr. Trump from “going on the attack against Mueller. But after [Trump attorney Rudolph W.] Giuliani joined the legal team, the president felt unleashed.”
He also said that former Trump attorney John Dowd called the investigation one of the “greatest frauds this country has ever seen.”
As Mr. Mueller’s report draws to a close, Mr. Cobb said he doubts that the probe would hurt Mr. Trump politically, saying he did not think anything new information would be presented.
