The Baltimore Ravens made the unexpected move of cutting starting safety Eric Weddle on Tuesday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported.

Weddle played three seasons for the Ravens after spending the first nine of his NFL career with the Chargers. At 34 years old, his release could be about age, but it was surprising nonetheless. Weddle had a year left on his contract and served as a key locker room presence for younger players.

Weddle has made 1,067 career tackles, 29 interceptions, 9.5 sacks and eight forced fumbles in his career.

The Ravens also may be parting ways with starting linebacker C.J. Mosley, whom they will not designate with the franchise tag. Mosley can leave in free agency, but the Ravens reportedly will try to re-sign him.
