SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) - An $8 million runway project has been put on hold at the Scottsbluff airport because local officials disagreed with federal authorities about how to proceed.
The Scottsbluff Star-Herald reports the Western Nebraska Airport Authority Board decided to delay the resurfacing of its cross wind runway because the Federal Aviation Administration balked at the cost.
The FAA suggested looking at shortening or possibly removing the runway after a consultant developed the $8 million cost estimate to remove a layer of asphalt and add new concrete.
Airport officials say the runway is used at least 500 times a year by large aircraft when strong cross winds prevent using the main runway.
Airport Director Raul Aguallo says the hope is that within a couple years, the number of flights will increase enough in Scottsbluff to justify the runway project.
