LUMPKIN, Ga. (AP) - Officials say a man who escaped from a federal immigration detention center in southern Georgia has been captured.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the detainee, identified as Erlin Gutierrez-Maradiaga of Honduras, escaped Saturday evening from Stewart Detention Center in rural Stewart County. The facility can house up to 1,900 people detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
CoreCivic, the corrections company that operates the Georgia detention center for ICE, said Gutierrez-Maradiaga was apprehended Sunday morning after he was spotted walking along a nearby highway. The company called him a “low-security detainee with no criminal past.”
CoreCivic said Gutierrez-Maradiaga is the first person to ever escape the Georgia detention center.
