While some defensive linemen were turning heads with blazing 40-yard dash times at the NFL scouting combine Sunday, Clemson prospect Dexter Lawrence pulled up with a hamstring injury.
The 342-pound defensive tackle ran the 40 in 5.05 seconds but did not return to the workout after that. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Lawrence’s injury is considered “minor.”
Lawrence dealt with an embarrassing end to his dominant Clemson career when he tested positive for a banned substance and was suspended for the College Football Playoff, which his Tigers went on to win without his help on the field.
Lawrence still denies taking any banned substance.
In the meantime, defensive linemen of a different shape and size than Lawrence were clocking lightning-quick 40s. Montez Sweat, an edge rusher from Mississippi State, led the positional group a 4.41. Florida State’s Brian Burns recorded a 4.53 and Michigan’s Rashan Gary ran a 4.58.
