BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A guard at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola has been arrested after officials found drugs inside her vehicle.

Louisiana Department of Corrections spokesman Ken Pastorick says a “shakedown” during Thursday’s 5 a.m. shift change at the prison led to the arrest.

After the drugs were found, officials say West Feliciana Parish sheriff’s deputies arrested 40-year-old Crystal Jenkins, of Woodville, Mississippi on charges of distributing marijuana, synthetic marijuana, and heroin, one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, and one count of introduction of contraband into a penal institution. She remained jailed Friday on $275,000 bond. It was unknown if Jenkins is represented by an attorney.

Jenkins worked at Angola since August 2018. Pastorick says she resigned and confessed to DOC investigators after the drugs were found.
