PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island has crowned its 2019 “Cherry Blossom Princess.”
Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo and Yasuhiro Yamauchi, of the Consulate-General of Japan in Boston, officially crowned Margaret Rogers at the Statehouse Friday.
Rogers, of East Providence, will represent Rhode Island in Washington, D.C., during formal events at the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
Rhode Island annually designates a Cherry Blossom Princess. Yamauchi says the ceremony shows the collaboration between Rhode Island and the consul general.
Raimondo says it’s an important event to support the Blackstone Valley and honor young women. Rogers graduated from Boston College in 2016. She was praised for her volunteer work with veterans.
Cherry trees have been planted in the Blackstone Valley municipalities of Pawtucket, Central Falls and Woonsocket to symbolize the friendship between the U.S. and Japan.
