PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The head of Special Olympics in Rhode Island is thanking President Donald Trump for authorizing continued federal funding for the Special Olympics.
In a statement Friday, Dennis DeJesus cited what he called a long history of support for Special Olympics from presidents and members of Congress from both parties. He said school-based programs are “transforming school climates to create a safer and more inclusive world.”
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos had spent days defending the administration’s request to eliminate funding for Special Olympics in the face of sharp criticism from lawmakers, advocates and many celebrities.
Trump told reporters on Thursday he was overriding his “people” and would restore Special Olympics funding.
DeVos said in a statement she was pleased that she and the president see “eye to eye” on the issue.
