BOSTON (AP) - Massachusetts regulators are investigating whether large marijuana companies are trying to bypass state law limiting to three the number of licenses any one company can control or own.
A lawyer for the state Cannabis Control Commission on Wednesday cited an ongoing investigation in denying The Boston Globe records relating to any allegations that companies were violating licensing caps.
The newspaper reported last week that two companies have publicly bragged to investors about amassing large numbers of licenses and provisional licenses in Massachusetts, using complex corporate structures. There is fear such tactics will shut out small, independent operators of recreational pot shops.
Both companies have denied violating any rules and insist they operate within state law.
If state regulators find violations, they could revoke existing licenses or deny applications for future ones.
