COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Senate has honored retiring Associated Press journalist Jack Jones for his more than 40 years in news media.
State Sen. Dick Harpootlian took to the Senate floor Thursday, one day before Jones retires after 25 years with the AP.
Harpootlian recalled how Jones covered the Statehouse starting in 1979 with the South Carolina Radio News Network.
Jones also worked as news director at WLTX-TV in Columbia before joining the AP in 1994.
Jones has worked his entire AP career opening the South Carolina bureau in the mornings. He was one of the first people on stories from the Susan Smith case to the Emanuel Church shooting to Strom Thurmond.
Jones plans to spend more time with his wife and family and sleep in.
