Rahm Emanuel isn’t going quietly into the night when it comes to Jussie Smollett’s “MAGA country” attack debacle.
The Chicago Mayor was back for a second day of calling out Illinois state prosecutors who dropped all 16 charges against the “Empire” actor, whose claims of a racist and homophobic attack on Jan. 29 unraveled as police conducted an exhaustive investigation.
“This looks like because he’s an actor, a person of influence, he got treated differently than anybody else,” Mr. Emanuel told ABC’s “Good Morning America” anchor George Stephanopoulos Wednesday morning.
The mayor — with Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson by his side — told reporters on Tuesday that a “whitewash of justice” had occurred.
“You have the state’s attorney’s office saying he’s not exonerated, he actually did commit this hoax,” Mr. Emanuel continued. “He’s saying he’s innocent. They better get their stories straight. This is actually making fools of all of us.”
Mr. Emanuel told GMA that the decision to drop all charges came out of nowhere like “a bolt of lightning.”
“This gets to who were are as a country right now, given that everybody is talking about us tearing apart, that he would take hate-crime legislation and turn it for his own self-enrichment rather than for the values that bring us together as a society,” he concluded. “None of this adds up, not only from the criminal justice side, from the values side — and we all deserve to this question for closure.”
