BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum has declared an emergency for a mid-March storm that resulted in more than $1 million in snow removal work across the state.

The declaration applies to 11 counties and the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. It’s a step toward pursuing a federal disaster declaration that could pave the way for federal aid.

The storm dropped up to a foot of wet, heavy snow in some areas. Burgum says local officials are now worried about having enough money to support flood-fighting efforts as the snow melts.

The massive late-winter storm caused problems throughout the central U.S., and many areas are now experiencing heavy flooding.
