Secretary of State Mike Pompeo insisted Wednesday that the Trump administration is still working “all across the government” to hold accountable the killers of dissident U.S.-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi Arabian agents in Turkey last October.
During a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, Rep. Gerry Connolly, Virginia Democrat, displayed a photo of himself with Mr. Khashoggi before showing a photo of Mr. Pompeo with Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia whom critics say must has at least known of the Khashoggi operation.
Mr. Pompeo visited the crown prince shortly after Mr. Khashoggi’s death, but the U.S. has not accused the Saudi prince of complicity in the killing. President Trump has expressed doubts that the full truth of the operation will ever be known.
“We will continue to work to identify those who are responsible for Jamal Khashoggi’s murder and hold them accountable,” Mr. Pompeo said.
He said he has still not listened to the Turkish intelligence tapes that reportedly recorded Mr. Khashoggi’s killing, but said he is “very confident” that he has substantial intelligence of the information available to the U.S.
