CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago man found dead over the weekend inside a vehicle was involved in an early test of Illinois’ concealed carry law.
The Chicago Tribune reports autopsy performed Monday by the Cook County medical examiner’s office determined 25-year-old Everardo Custodio died of multiple gunshot wounds. Chicago police say investigators believe Custodio’s slaying was gang related. No arrests have been made.
In April 2015, Custodio became embroiled in the concealed carry debate when an Uber driver and concealed carry license holder wounded Custodio, who was seen firing shots at a group of people standing on a street corner.
The shooting by John Hendricks of Custodio was one of the earliest examinations of how Chicago police handled instances of license holders who’d discharged their weapons. Illinois, in 2013, was the last state in the country to adopt concealed carry.
Authorities determined Hendricks acted in self-defense and didn’t charge him with shooting Custodio, who served a prison sentence for firing his gun.
