OPINION:
Kellyanne Conway, White House counselor, responded to special counsel Robert Mueller’s report of “Not Guilty” on collusion for President Donald Trump by saying on early morning Fox News television: And now House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff must resign.
She has a point.
If Schiff doesn’t resign from office in red-faced shame, he at least ought to issue a massive apology.
This is the guy, after all, who spent day after day, week after week, month after month — for years — taking to national airwaves to tell any and all who would listen that Trump would soon be proven guilty of collusion, that any day now Trump would fall on collusion charges, that he, as a fine, upstanding member of Congress and the Democratic Party, had the inside scoop on this investigation and the skinny was, Trump was as guilty as guilty could be. On collusion. On the impeachable, criminal, prosecutable charge of collusion.
Oh, but he’s not. So says Mueller, the same guy on whom Schiff placed all his hope and dreams for an ultimate impeachment.
“He ought to resign today,” Conway said on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends,” The Hill reported. “He’s been on every TV show 50 times a day for practically the last two years, promising Americans that this president would either be impeached or indicted.”
So what does Schiff say to all this Mueller stuff about Trump’s complete and utter innocence of collusion with Russia?
“I trust Mueller’s prosecutorial judgement,” he wrote in a tweet, “but the country must see the evidence.”
That’s his weasley way of saying: Yes, I believe — but I’m not going to let my political will fall to the wayside of silly facts.
That’s his weasley way of telling taxpayers who just spent $25-plus million on this two-plus years of investigation — wait for it, wait for it, more investigation is coming.
Schiff, right about now, should have egg on his face.
Instead, he’s trying to fry up some new charges.
