HONOLULU (AP) - Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard gets high marks for her first performance evaluation since taking over the department.
The Honolulu Police Commission released Ballard’s evaluation Thursday, saying she “exceeds expectations” in most categories including leadership, training and community relations.
Commission Chairwoman Loretta Sheehan says Ballard turned a “fractured” department around.
Ballard was selected in 2017 to become the first woman to be the department’s chief. She replaced Louis Kealoha, who retired amid a federal corruption investigation. Kealoha and his wife, former deputy prosecutor Katherine Kealoha, were indicted on charges including framing a relative and bilking banks and children for their lavish lifestyle. They pleaded not guilty.
Ballard “meets expectations” in the managerial category. Commissioners say she needs to address vacancies or determine that the positions are no longer needed.
