United Airlines informed customers on Friday that the skies will be a bit more woke with non-binary gender options for passengers.
“Fly how you identify. Our new non-binary gender options are now available,” the airlines said in a tweet. “United continues to lead in inclusivity.”
An accompanying image included boxes with “Mr.,” “Ms.” and “Mx.” options.
“United is determined to lead the industry in LGBT inclusivity, and we are so proud to be the first U.S. airline to offer these inclusive booking options for our customers,” United’s Chief Customer Officer Toby Enqvist said in a statement. “United is excited to share with our customers, whether they identify along the binary of male or female or not, that we are taking the steps to exhibit our care for them while also providing additional employee training to make us even more welcoming for all customers and employees.”
The company added that it worked with Human Rights Campaign and The Trevor Project to train its employees on initiatives regarding preferred pronouns, “the persistence of gender norms,” and “LGBT competency in the workplace.”
Delta spokesperson Kate Modolo then told USA Today that it too expects to provide non-binary gender options.
“As part of Delta’s ongoing efforts to reflect inclusivity and respond to the needs of our diverse customer population, we are planning to offer a non-binary gender option during the booking process,” she told the newspaper.
